May it be school, college ,preparation of competitive exams or learning something new. In all these scenerios one thing is common. We take a lot of notes. But the sad part is, we never asked ourselves, "is there a better way to take notes". In this article , I will share with you - Cornell Note Taking Strategy. Learning this will take your note taking to a next level. This strategy has 2 inbuilt features. 

1. It will help you understand content much better. 

2. It will help you with exam preparation.

I am creating this high quality content and I don't want you to miss out on it please subscribe to this channel. Let's know about Cornell note taking method. You have to start by dividing your page in 2 columns. Left column will be used for keywords/questions. Right side column will be used for note-taking. We will leave some space towards the bottom of the page and we will call this space as summary section. Let's understand each of these sections. We will take notes in the note-taking section as we normally do. headings, subheadings, diagrams and other things you do while taking notes. Let me give you an example of my notes. These are my thermodynamics notes - first law, second law, open and closed system. Next column is Keyword/Questions column (super important) You will use this column to write questions which you will create on your own. Imagine on the right side(note-taking column) you have written about thermodynamics , its laws. So, in the keywords/questions columns you will write questions like - what is thermodynamics, or what are laws of thermodynamics. Now, you might ask how many and what kind of questions do I need to write You should write enough questions so that all the content towards the right side(note-taking) column gets covered using the questions. You can create these questions in class or when you are reviewing notes after coming back home. The usecase of this is that when you will revise the content in future just put your hand/notebook on the right side of the page. Look at the questions on the left and try to recall the answers. Recalling information this way is known as Active recall. Whenever you answer these questions, it takes effort for your brain to recall the information. When your brain does the effort, only then the neural pathways in your brain associated with learning strengthens. This is the reason why reading your notes line-by-line is an ineffecient way because your brain has to make no effort doing it. But, when you answer these questions learning is super effective. It's just not effective it's also fast. Lets say a notebook's page has 30-32 line. If you go ahead and re-read line-by-line it will be slow. Instead you have written 3-4 questions  against those notes. You can quickly look at the notes and will try to recall them. This will make your revisions faster. In case you feel writing questions is taxing. For example - Instead of What is thermodynamics? I can write just  thermodynamics in keywords/questions column to recall the content. So you can just use the keyword "Thermodynamics" there. Finally the summary section. In this section we write down what you have learned in this whole page, in your own words (easy words). You can relate it to the Feynman technique - you are trying to put the concepts in easy words to yourself. When you do this you get a lot of questions. You try to find answers to those questions and eventually yourunderstanding gets stronger. To get complete understanding of something you need to -

    

 1. You need to know all the components that make up that topic.

 2. Where does this topic lie in the bigger picture.

On this page we learned thermodynamics, it's laws and open/closed systems. I was not able to understand why open and closed systems are being taught in the class. So, I went to the definition of thermodynamics - it said it's the study of energy energy transformation and it's relationto matter So, I realised that if I want to study this transformation or interaction I need to have an environment. Basically closed or open system, were created so we can comfortably and easily study these interactions and transformations. In a similar manner, you should summarise all the topics and there relations in easy words and your notes are complete. You can make changes in this note-taking strategy according to your need. Instead of having summary below each page you can have summary after each lecture. Important is following the underlying principles

 1. Use active recall with questions. 

2. Summarising all the things you learned in class and understanding where a particular topic lies in the bigger picture.
